Cat Litter Box Setup: Placement, Cleaning & Choosing a Mat

A litter box is one of the most important everyday resources in a cat's home. A good setup should be easy for your cat to reach and simple for you to keep clean. If you're choosing a first litter box or improving an existing area, start with the cat rather than the room's decor.

Choose a box your cat can use comfortably

Look for enough space for your cat to enter, turn around and dig. Kittens, older cats and cats with mobility problems may do better with a lower entrance. Some cats accept covered boxes, while others prefer open boxes that allow them to see their surroundings. If your cat avoids a covered box, try an open option in a similar location.

Find a quiet, accessible spot

Place the box somewhere your cat can reach without passing loud appliances or getting trapped by another pet. Keep it away from food and water when practical. Multi-cat homes usually benefit from having more than one box in separate accessible areas.

Scoop daily and keep it fresh

Remove waste regularly and replace litter according to the product's instructions. Wash the box with gentle soap and rinse it thoroughly; strong scents can be unpleasant for some cats. Sudden changes in litter type or box location may disrupt an established routine, so introduce changes gradually.

Use a litter mat where the cat exits

A trapping mat outside the entrance can collect litter carried out on paws. Choose one that's easy to clean and lies flat without curling at the edges. Pair it with a scoop you can comfortably use every day.

When to get help

If your cat suddenly starts avoiding the litter box, strains to urinate, or changes bathroom habits, consult a veterinarian promptly. Litter box problems can sometimes signal medical issues rather than a simple preference.
